Mater Motley and her Traveling Hand

I just started rereading Clive Barker’s ABARAT series (a really fantastic fantasy series, though as yet unfinished) and just recently came across the evil Mater Motleys carriage – a huge, animated severed hand. How perfect for the topic! So here’s Mater Motley, sewing one of her stitchlings and riding around on that big, icky hand. …it kind of reminds me of Thing from the Addams Family.

  1. Leave it to you (and Clive Barker) to creep me out just before bedtime!

I love the chipped nails and especially the sewing hand of the Mater Motley herself. (and those skulls are adorable)

  2. How good are the illustrations in the Abarat series aye? The cloud that whisks away the little girl to Abarat is etched into memory. I’m so pleased to see an interpretation of a character from that series attempted here. It’s a special book 🙂

    • Agreed! Clive Barkers paintings are great – his insane use of color really gets to me, you can see so much of the horror from his movies in those paintings, and a lot of twisted beauty too.

The 3rd book just came out here, I can’t wait to read it!
